  • Construction has commenced on a new multi-storey classroom block and visual arts building for Kalamunda Senior High School.

Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery and Kalamunda MLA Matthew Hughes visited the school today to turn the first sod of the $25.3 million project, which is funded as part of the State Government’s WA Recovery Plan and is set to be completed towards the end of next year.

The new multi-storey block with eight classrooms will support the continued growth in enrolments at Kalamunda Senior High School.

A new four-studio visual arts building will provide areas for drawing, painting, print-making, ceramics/sculpture and multi-media to help students develop their creative talents.

Kalamunda Secondary Education Support Centre will also benefit with six new classrooms and ancillary areas, as well as an undercroft area that has been designed to accommodate up to 10 general classrooms to support future growth.

A further $1.7 million has also been allocated to upgrade the STEM facilities, including a new science room and repurposed room to increase the home economics food area.

Perth-based architectural firm TAG Architects has been appointed to design the new facilities.

As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

“When these upgrades are completed, students will have access to new state-of-the-art facilities to support their passions for art and learning.

“The new buildings and facilities will support student growth at both Kalamunda Senior High School and Kalamunda Education Support Centre as they continue to be popular choices for local families.”

As stated by Kalamunda MLA Matthew Hughes:

“It’s exciting and very satisfying to be present at the turning of the sod for the new buildings at Kalamunda Senior High School and Kalamunda Secondary Education Support Centre.

“It’s important for local students to have access to a world-class education here in WA and that includes access to high quality facilities like those provided by this $18.3 million investment at Kalamunda Senior High School and Kalamunda Secondary Education Support Centre.

“Since my election to State Parliament 2017, I have worked to ensure that Kalamunda Senior High School and the Education Support Centre receives this much-needed investment.

“I am especially pleased to see that students with a disability will have access to the state-of-the-art facilities and the specialist support they need within their local area.”
