Work progressing on Southern Remand Centre 12 May

Elise Archer,Minister for Corrections

The Tasmanian Government is addressing the challenges facing the State’s prison system with work on the new $79 million Southern Remand Centre and Risdon Prison Complex Shared Facilities upgrade progressing on schedule.

Managing Contractor, Hansen Yuncken has this week commenced installing precast panels for the new perimeter wall marking an important milestone in the project.

The new Southern Remand Centre is a key component of the Government’s $350 million infrastructure investment program to improve Tasmania’s prison facilities and will significantly increase the capacity of the prison system, providing 154 beds across two units when it begins operation in late 2021.

More than 130 jobs are expected to be created during construction, with a further 50 ongoing jobs created when the facility becomes operational.

It is pleasing to see that this important infrastructure project is continuing despite the challenges that COVID-19 is presenting, and I look forward to this facility delivering improved accommodation for inmates.
