The City of Launceston will next month begin construction of a new ash placement garden at Carr Villa Memorial Park. The $800,000 project will see the creation of a new garden on a vacant area of land in the southeast of the park.
Capable of housing 2650 ash placements, the garden will feature granite walls, water features and earthwork terraces, as well as irrigation systems, accessible pathways, power conduits and lighting.
The project will also see the existing car park upgraded, along with new kerb and stormwater infrastructure. Construction work on the project is expected to be complete in the fourth quarter of 2021, weather depending.
The project is part of the City of Launceston’s Accelerated Capital Works Program, an initiative of the Community Care and Recovery Package, Tasmania’s largest local government response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Over five years the program will bring forward a range of targeted infrastructure projects across the municipality, aimed at sparking new economic activity and employment opportunities.
The program is designed to be agile, allowing the Council to bring forward necessary community projects, while also weighing demands on the local construction industry to ensure value for money.
Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said cremation was now a common method of interment, and that Northern Tasmanian families were increasingly looking for more options for ash placement.
“The aim of this project is to create another beautiful garden at Carr Villa Memorial Park, providing a peaceful place of remembrance,” Mayor van Zetten said.
“Carr Villa Memorial Park is an extremely important community asset, and this project will expand the choices families have when seeking to inter a loved one.”
