Works begin on major upgrade of Wellington Street, Wallan

Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell officially broke ground on the much-anticipated Wellington Street upgrade in Wallan on Thursday 5 September.

The upgrade is part of the Australian Government’s $11 million commitment towards the Macedon and Mitchell Shire Roads project, with $5.5 million being provided towards the Wellington Street and Darraweit Road upgrades. Mitchell Shire Council is also committing $200,000 towards the upgrades.

The $3 million Wellington Street upgrade component of the project, will deliver road safety works at Wellington Street between Duke Street and Watson Street, enhancing road safety, connectivity, and accessibility for the Wallan community.

The upgrade includes asphalt road surfacing, on-street parking, and raised pedestrian crossings. Key intersection treatments will also include underground drainage, kerb and channel works, new street lighting, line marking, road signage and tactile ground surface indicators.

Other associated works will include constructing a footpath, and a shared-user path for safe and active commuting options for the broader Wallan community.

Works on the Wellington Street upgrade are expected to be completed by June 2025.

Mayor Louise Bannister expressed her gratitude to the Federal Government, and Member for McEwan Rob Mitchell, highlighting the importance of the project for the local community.

“These works will bring significant improvements to our local infrastructure, making Wallan a safer and more connected place to live,” she said.

“The project is in addition to the $2.7 million upgrade to Darraweit Road between Acacia Way and Roulston Way that is also funded by the Federal Government and is expected to begin in early 2025.

“These upgrades are key components of the Council’s broader strategy to enhance road safety and connectivity across the Shire, ensuring the infrastructure keeps pace with the region’s rapid growth.”

Works on the Wellington Street upgrade are expected to be completed by June 2025.
