Works Underway On Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre

VIC Premier

The Andrews Labor Government is on track to deliver a brand-new sports centre in the heart of Melbourne’s inner-north by mid-2024 with major construction works now underway on the Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre.

One of the few vertically designed sports centres to be built in Australia, this innovative multi-purpose venue will support local sports clubs and encourage more of the community to get active.

The Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre is being constructed by Built Environs on the Fitzroy Gasworks site, with major construction expected to generate about 150 jobs.

The unique vertical design of the centre is in response to the demand for sports venues in built-up inner-city areas – providing room for a range of local sports clubs including the Collingwood Basketball Association.

It’s set to include four multi-purpose courts for highball sports, a multi-purpose court for futsal, a gymnasium, café and lounge area, community facilities, change rooms, umpire change rooms, foyer and reception.

The new sports centre will be built adjacent to the Wurun Senior Campus which opened in Term One of the 2022 school year. The new sports centre will be designed and constructed to integrate with the school’s two indoor sports courts to enable shared use and create a six-court facility outside of school hours.

The Labor Government has invested $49.5 million in the project, alongside a $5 million contribution from Yarra City Council, which will manage the centre.

The project forms part of the Government’s vision for the Fitzroy Gasworks Precinct to create a new neighbourhood that will be home for more than a thousand families. For more information visit development.vic.gov.au/projects/fitzroy-gasworks.
