World class opportunity in food, hospitality and tourism education

Expressions of interest open today to be part of creating a world class centre at Lot Fourteen for higher education in food, hospitality and tourism in the heart of Adelaide, Australia’s food and wine capital.

The Marshall Liberal Government’s International Centre for Food, Hospitality and Tourism Studies will be built on a prime site in Adelaide’s central business district at the nation’s most exciting innovation and entrepreneurship neighbourhood, Lot Fourteen.

“Our vision is to create a world class facility in a new, fully integrated centre that will maximise the economic potential of a CBD-based, internationally renowned food, hospitality and tourism education and research facility,” Minister for Innovation and Skills David Pisoni said.

“In partnership with the Australian Government, the State Government has committed $60 million towards the establishment of the International Centre, part of a $551 million investment under the Adelaide City Deal program.”

Lot Fourteen is a seven-hectare neighbourhood being created on the site of the former Royal Adelaide Hospital to drive investment, innovation and jobs in deep technology industries and to become an international commercial hub that is a dynamic extension of the city.

Lot Fourteen is bringing together government, global industries, entrepreneurs, and research institutions. It is set to become the home of the Australian Space Agency, the Space Discovery Centre and the Aboriginal Art and Cultures Centre, all of which will have broad national and international appeal.

“We’re aiming to cement South Australia as an international leader in food, hospitality and tourism education,” Minister Pisoni said.

“We’re looking for leaders to work with us to establish a world-renowned facility that will be the pinnacle of Australia’s educational institutions in these growing industries.

“We have an ambitious agenda to achieve three percent economic growth and international education is a key enabler. It is now South Australia’s largest services export, following a 34 percent increase in the number of international students enrolled in higher education and Vocational Education and Training courses over the past five years.

“Another key component is our $7.3 billon tourism industry, which leverages our beautiful landscapes, nature and strength in food and wine culture.”

Adelaide is one of only ten Great Wine Capitals of the world and South Australia produces 70 per cent of Australia’s premium wine from internationally recognised regions, including the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and the Coonawarra.

“Our tourism industry employs 36,000 people and we’re aiming for it to reach $8 billion turnover by 2020, generating an additional 10,000 jobs.

“We have more than $2 billion worth of tourism accommodation in the pipeline for Adelaide and tourism has been identified as a super growth industry over the next 20 years.

“The number of hospitality students will need to keep growing as the local, national and international demand for skilled workers increases.

“The International Centre at Lot Fourteen is a significant opportunity to attract greater numbers of students and provide them with the skills and qualifications to become leaders in this industry.”

Expressions of Interest are being sought by Renewal SA on behalf of the State Government of South Australia for suitable companies or organisations to join in creating the centre as managers or tenants of food, hospitality and tourism education, training and research facilities, or as property developers or commercial investors.

EOIs are welcome from experienced consortiums which can demonstrate experience in working as a group to successfully deliver a complex and innovative project.

The State Government will use this EOI process to shortlist parties with the appropriate skills and vision that can deliver on the Government’s objectives for the International Centre and Lot Fourteen. This represents Stage One of an intended two-staged process for the project.

Renewal SA has appointed commercial real estate agents, Colliers International Adelaide, to manage the EOI process, which opens on Friday 25 October 2019 and closes on Friday 6 December at 2pm.
