Yarra celebrates ten years as carbon neutral Council

Yarra City Council has been confirmed as carbon neutral for the tenth year in a row for our entire Council operations.

Climate Active, who certify carbon neutral organisations, have confirmed Yarra has continued to meet the rigorous carbon neutral criteria.

Since 2008/09, Yarra’s total emissions have reduced by more than 70 per cent, with major reductions achieved via street lighting, building upgrades through Energy Performance Contracts and sourcing 100% renewable electricity.

“I’m proud that Yarra was the first council in Victoria to be accredited as carbon neutral, and now we’ve maintained this status for a decade,” said Mayor of Yarra, Cr Sophie Wade.

“Transformational change is needed across every level of government to rapidly reduce carbon emissions, change our resource intensive ways of life, and to adapt to living in an unstable climate,” she said.

In response to the climate emergency, Yarra adopted a Climate Emergency Plan for 2020-24. The plan commits to a series of actions to reduce emissions and supports the community to do the same. Following this leadership at the organisational level, Council has also set the ambitious target to achieve zero net emissions for the entire municipality by 2030.
