Yarrabilba State Secondary College officially opened

Foundation students and staff have been congratulated on an outstanding first half of the 2020 school year at the official opening of the new Yarrabilba State Secondary College (YSSC).

Logan MP Linus Power said approximately 280 Year 7 and 8 students are attending the new $65 million secondary school which opened for Day 1 2020 at the start of the year.

“The official opening of the new school is an exciting milestone for our community,” Mr Power said.

“The first stage of the new school features junior classrooms, a science centre, hospitality and technology centres, an administration building, a sports centre, multiple ovals and a grandstand.

“This is just one of 3 new local schools that have been or are being built by the Palaszczuk Government in this region, recognising the rapid growth we are experiencing.”

Education Minister Grace Grace said while the coronavirus had delayed the official opening of the school, it was great to see how well students and staff had been working throughout the inaugural semester of school.

“We would have liked to have officially opened YSSC earlier in the year, but we all know the impact that COVID-19 is having around the world,” Ms Grace said.

“Queensland’s economic recovery begins with job creation and building new school infrastructure is vital to ensure a pipeline of construction jobs continues in this region.

“The Premier and I opened Yarrabilba State School in 2018, today we are officially opening YSSC and in 2022 we will officially open another new primary school in Greenbank.

“Only the Palaszcuzk Government is committed to investing in education in Queensland and in particular in the Logan area.”

Ms Grace said YSSC was one of eight new schools to open at the start of the 2020 school year.

“The opening of these eight schools represents an investment of $450 million supporting an estimated 1450 full-time jobs.

“The construction of Yarrabilba State Secondary College has supported an estimated 175 jobs across the life of the project, including approximately 32,000 trainee and apprentice hours on site.”

Yarrabilba State Secondary College Foundation Principal Belinda Tregea said staff and students were excited to walk through the doors of the new school for the start of Term 1, 2020.

“Yarrabilba State Secondary College has been warmly welcomed by the local community and I feel extremely privileged to be appointed to lead this new school,” she said.

“The staff and I are excited about ‘doing school differently’ to meet the needs of our diverse community and couldn’t be happier with our student’s engagement and achievement in such a short time.

“I am looking forward to continuing to work closely with the school community as we take on the second half of what so far has proven to be an unusual school year.”

During her time in Logan today, Minister Grace also visited Park Ridge State High School to officially open their new $6.4 million learning centre, part of the Queensland Government’s 2020 Ready program.

“Park Ridge State High School’s new 2020 Ready learning centre is a fantastic addition to this growing secondary school,” MS Grace said.

“The modern two-storey facility includes an impressive 12 learning spaces, two robotics labs and two staff rooms.

“During construction, the new facility, built by Kane Constructions Pty Ltd, supported up to 19 full-time jobs.”
