Yellow recycling bin lids – East Gippsland

New yellow recycling bin lids will soon be seen on residents’ wheelie bins in Mallacoota, Cann River, Omeo, Swifts Creek, Ensay and Raymond Island.

East Gippsland Shire Council’s contractor, Tambo Waste, will carry out the changeover to bring the shire in line with Australian colour standards.

Residents are encouraged to be aware of the changeover and become familiar with the Australian Standard lid colours of yellow for recycling, red for general waste and green for green waste / organics.

The lid replacement program will take place over the next few years, with the towns of Mallacoota, Cann River, Omeo, Swifts Creek, Ensay and Raymond Island being the first. Wheelie bins with yellow lids will also be supplied to new houses, and when damaged bins are replaced.

It’s important everyone plays their role and becomes familiar with the change as recycling supports local jobs and keeps valuable items out of landfill.

Items accepted in yellow household recycling bins include:

  • Clean cardboard/paper
  • Firm plastics (triangle 1 to 7)
  • Steel cans, aluminium cans, foil (scrunched into a ball)
  • Glass bottles and jars (not crockery or Pyrex)
  • Milk and juice containers.

It is important all items are rinsed and clean, and the wrong items such as plastic bags and soft plastics, clothing and garden clippings are not placed in the yellow bins, as it contaminates the bin contents and ends up in landfill.
