Yet another stadium problem rears its head 07 December 2023

The provisional heritage listing of the Goods Shed spells even more trouble for Premier Rockliff’s bloody-minded pursuit of building a stadium at Macquarie Point.

The government’s own heritage body has now decided the Goods Shed has significant heritage value. It is unclear how the government can respect this decision and forge ahead with a stadium at the same time.

Every time you scratch the surface of this project, another problem rears its head.

Whether it’s the ground conditions of the site, problems with stakeholders, available land or the size and bulk of the proposal, it’s becoming clearer and clearer that Rockliff’s stadium is a dud.

And that’s before we even consider the project’s budget.

No-one but the Premier believed a 23,000 seat, roofed stadium could be built at Macquarie Point for $715 million a year ago, and I doubt even he thinks he can do it now.
