The City of Hobart is calling on young artists to submit artworks exploring the theme of a new ‘Epoch.’
Selected works will be displayed at locations across the Hobart CBD as part of Hobart Current: Epoch, an exciting biennial celebration of contemporary art taking place from 17 November 2023 to 11 February 2024.
Hobart Creative City Portfolio Chair Cr John Kelly said Hobart Current was a biennial exhibition run by the City of Hobart in partnership with the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and directed by new Dark Mofo artistic Director, Chris Twite.
“The Epoch art trail is a wonderful opportunity for young and aspiring artists from the Hobart community to be part of a program which features some of the best leading and emerging contemporary artists from around Tasmania, Australia, and the world,” Cr Kelly said.
“It’s also a fantastic opportunity to showcase the creativity and talents of Hobart’s young artists.”
Cr Kelly said young artists would bring a unique perspective to the theme of ‘Epoch.’
“‘Epoch’ can be defined as a new distinctive time period marked by a significant event,” he said.
“With emerging technologies, the impacts of COVID, economic shifts and changing global politics, young people between the ages of 12-25 are growing up and coming of age in very interesting times.
“What will this new future bring’ is an important question for our young people to answer.”
One such young artist is Onyx Tambasco (pictured), whose digital artwork is a personal reflection on their own Epoch.
“To me Epoch is a time or era in someone’s life. My piece is about existing as a trans person and how even though they do not fit societies norms, they are still human, existing in this space and time,” he said.
“Hobart Current is a great chance to put yourself out there and share your art with your community.”
Submissions on the ‘Epoch’ theme can be made for a number of public art locations:
- Selected work to be displayed outside in our Art on Victoria youth street gallery (submissions close 22 October).
- Selected digital works to be displayed on the Loop our outdoor digital art screen or projected from the Youth Art and Recreation Centre (Youth ARC) window onto Campbell Street after dark (submissions close 30 October).
- Postcard exhibition open to people of all ages (submissions close 10 November).
