Bass Coast Shire Council’s Young Leaders for our Environment came together recently, to turn their passion for our environment into practical initiatives to help Bass Coast reduce its ecological footprint.
Two representatives from every school across Bass Coast were invited to explore their environmental interests through a series of fun activities.
Representatives from Council, Westernport Water, Phillip Island Nature Parks, Bass Coast Landcare Network, Plastic Free Phillip Island and Youth Gurus joined the workshop.
One of the key activities of the day involved three of the local groups ‘pitching a project’ to the Young Leaders, who were given a strict budget and the task of deciding the level of funding each project would receive.
Landcare’s pitch to have the Young Leaders plan and undertake a future tree planting day proved to be the overall winner.
Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari, said the enthusiasm and passion of the Young Leaders was impressive.
“With Council recently declaring a ‘Climate Emergency’, it would appear that our Young Leaders are more than ready to take action,” Cr Tessari said.
An official presentation ceremony will be held for Bass Coast’s Young Leaders on Tuesday, 17 March at the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre, to celebrate their commitment to our local environment, in partnership with Landcare, Nature Parks and Plastic Free Phillip Island.
The activities held as part of the recent workshop have been documented in photos, music and film and will be presented to the students and their special guests at the ceremony.
