$1.14 million to Legacy WA for veteran support programs

  • The McGowan Government is delivering on its election commitment to support veterans transitioning back into civilian life, with Legacy WA set to receive $1.14 million over three years.

    The funding will support three of Legacy WA’s key programs that assist hundreds of veterans and their families, and will be provided through the Anzac Day Trust Grants Program.

    Legacy WA will receive $477,000 for its Living Independently program, which supports the families of veterans in regional and metropolitan areas and helps those with similar shared experiences build social connections.

    A further grant of $300,000 has been allocated to Legacy WA’s intake program which engages eligible families to understand their needs and provide assistance in managing emotional and financial instability.

    Legacy WA’s Busselton holiday camp will receive $363,786 through the Respite Support program, which gives current serving members, veterans and their families an opportunity for respite and a chance to connect.

    First committed to at the March State Election and funded as part of the 2021-22 State Budget, the McGowan Government has increased the annual funding to veterans’ organisations by $1 million to $1.3 million.

    The State Government has also invested $430,000 to develop a local assistance dogs program for veterans and first responders.

    As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

    “The sacrifice and commitment of our veterans must be recognised well beyond the end of their service, and we are focused on providing strong support for their transition back to civilian life.

    “Ex-servicemen and women hold a special place in our community, and today’s announcement will enable Legacy WA to support even more veterans and their families.

    “We want Western Australia to be the best place in the nation for veterans to transition back into civilian life by making sure we provide support for employment opportunities, mental health programs and organisations such as Legacy WA.”

    As stated by Veterans Issues Minister Paul Papalia:

    “Our veterans deserve our gratitude and support for the service they have given Australia.

    “The McGowan Government values our veterans and their service, and today’s announcement means more veterans will have access to programs that assist with the transition from the ADF to civilian life.

    “Our $1.14 million commitment to Legacy WA is an example of how the State Government is delivering on its commitment to support veterans.”
