Last week the threat of floods became a bitter reality for us and so many Victorians. Obviously Carisbrook was our key community of concern within our Shire.

Thank goodness we were spared loss of life. Tragically that was not the situation across Victoria.

The hope then is to avoid or minimise loss of stock or property damage. Our thoughts and care go to those who did suffer property loss. We can only be grateful and thankful it was not more extensive. Clearly some communities confront widespread damage with the anxiety the worst is yet to come.

Clearly the preparation and training of emergency services over years played out so well. Each agency knew what they needed to do and when.

Although the Carisbrook levee is not completed, importantly it and its drains, made a difference for the better.

All Councillors join with me to extend a huge thank you to Council staff, emergency services personnel/volunteers (local SES and CFA crews) and Victoria Police who have supported our community throughout this event.

Community groups and volunteers did such a wonderful job especially Maryborough Salvation Army and those who worked so hard to support those staying at the Relief Centre based in the Maryborough Leisure Centre including providing meals.

We know there are uncertain times ahead. All of us need to comply with any directions we receive and never enter flood waters.

Our community did what it always does so well – looking out for others, especially in times of real need.
