2023 Achiever Awards recognise success of young people with out-of-home care experience

  • Achievements of 42 Western Australian young people who have been in out-of-home care recognised
  • Achiever Awards celebrate and support recipients in their higher education and training pursuits across university, apprenticeships, and traineeships

Child Protection Minister Sabine Winton has recognised the 42 recipients of this year’s Achiever Awards at a ceremony held today.

The awards celebrate young Western Australians, aged between 15 to 25 years, who are, or have been, in the care of the Department of Communities and have overcome significant barriers to pursue further education and training.

Recipients are recognised across categories including the University Achiever Award, the Registered Training Achiever Award and the Apprenticeship or Traineeship Achiever Award.

Winners receive financial support of $1,000 or $4,000 to assist with the costs of their studies, and a trophy and certificate to celebrate their efforts.

The program also offers a $1,000 prize for the Community Spirit Award, which recognises an Achiever Award winner who has demonstrated leadership and volunteering in their local community.

The Achiever Awards are now in their 33rd year and they have supported more than 590 young people since their inception in 1990.

This year’s recipients are commencing studies in areas such as engineering and science, as well as carpentry and chef apprenticeships.

The awards are supported by major sponsors Curtin University, as well as the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Apprenticeship Support Australia, The University of Notre Dame Australia and The University of Western Australia.

As stated by Child Protection Minister Sabine Winton:

“As Child Protection Minister and a former teacher, this event is an incredible celebration of the achievements of young people who are excelling in their education and training pursuits despite personal obstacles.

“The Achiever Awards celebrate the accomplishments of these young Western Australians with an experience in out-of-home care, and support them to achieve their dreams through financial assistance and encouragement.

“While the awards acknowledge the efforts of the young people, they also honour the important contributions of foster carers, extended families and case workersin supporting young people to achieve their goals.”
