$2.2 million for healthier communities

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government will provide nearly $2.2 million in new grant funding for community and not-for-profit organisations to invest in the health and wellbeing of their communities.

Twenty-six organisations across Tasmania have been successful in securing Healthy Tasmania Fund grants of up to $200 000.

The grants are aimed at reducing smoking, improving healthy eating and physical activity, and reducing the rates of obesity in Tasmania.

The successful projects demonstrate a strong evidence base, wide reach in their community or high needs groups, strong community partnerships, value for money and sustainability beyond the grant funding.

Successful projects include:

  • helping people quit smoking through intensive and targeted smoking cessation support;
  • supporting social enterprises supply local seasonal food to their communities; and
  • providing free outdoor fitness and adventure sessions to young people.

Due to the large number of high quality applications, the Government has provided an additional $770 000 to its initial $1.4 million funding for this round of Healthy Tasmania Fund grants.

Next year the Government will announce a new round of Healthy Tasmania Fund grants for 2020-21.

The community-led grants are an important part of the Healthy Tasmania Five Year Strategic Plan, enabling community connections to strengthen and help people live a happy, healthy life.

Healthy Tasmania is a key part of the Government’s investment to prevent chronic conditions and improve the health and wellbeing of all Tasmanians.
