A Sunday drive leads to a car impounded at Thomastown

A decision by a group of friends to go for a Sunday drive has led to a variety of driving charges, heavy fines and a car being impounded at Thomastown.

A 21-year-old driver from Roxburgh Park with three passengers in his SUV was detected travelling at 169 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the Metropolitan Ring Road about 4.30pm yesterday.

When intercepted, the driver told members of the Greensborough Highway Patrol they were catching up to ‘chill’.

The probationary driver recorded .047 on an evidentiary breath test.

He will be charged on summons with multiple traffic offences including dangerous driving, speeding, failing to display P-plates and exceeding the prescribed alcohol limit.

The Range Rover was impounded under the hoon legislation.

This impound forms part of Operation Nexus, a five-day focus on keeping our community safe on the roads during the Easter long weekend.

The state-wide operation aims to reduce road trauma, including the number of lives lost and injuries on our roads.

During this time motorists can expect to be breath tested and drug tested, have their vehicles scanned and be checked for speeding.

The operation involves all available personnel including local road policing units, general duties, other operational policing units and centralised resources from Road Policing Command.

The operation started at 12.01am on Thursday 9 April and concludes at 11.59pm on Monday 13 April.

Whilst committing the offences, the offenders were also found to be in breach of the directions issued by the Chief Health Officer and were each issued a $1652 penalty notice.

The directions by the Chief Health Officer, under the State of Emergency declared in Victoria, have been enacted to help stop the spread of Coronavirus.
