Additional $1.1 million to extend Middleton Beach foreshore works

  • McGowan Government commits additional funding to Middleton Beach Foreshore Enhancement Project
  • City of Albany can now expand original project scope to improve accessibility and amenity
  • Part of the McGowan Government’s $5.5 billion WA Recovery Plan and builds on $2.47 million already committed to the project
  • The recently upgraded Middleton Beach foreshore is set to benefit from even further improvements, with the McGowan Government today announcing an additional $1.1 million in funding for the project.

The $1.1 million in additional funding adds to the existing $2.47 million the McGowan Government committed in 2018 to the Middleton Beach foreshore works.

The additional funds will enable the City of Albany, who are delivering the project, to expand the scope of works for the foreshore improvements.

    The expanded scope will deliver:

    • increased car parking, extending a public promenade, seating lighting and landscaping;
    • upgrades to the Ellen Cove amphitheatre including rebuilding the stone walls, lighting, seating and picnic facilities; and
    • boardwalk and jetty link, which includes a pedestrian walkway and solar lights.

In total, the Middleton Beach Foreshore Enhancement Project has received $9 million in funding from State Government, the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions program and the City of Albany.

The original project began in 2019 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Construction on the expanded project is expected to commence in early 2021.

The latest funding commitment will be administered on behalf of the State Government through DevelopmentWA, the delivery agency for the Middleton Beach Activity Centre precinct.

As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

“The additional $1.1 million for the Middleton Beach upgrades provides both economic and social benefits to the region, as part of the WA Recovery Plan.

“Not only does it mean remaining components of the project can now go ahead, giving the community an even better foreshore redevelopment than was otherwise envisioned for this point in time, it also ensures more jobs are created for locals.”

As stated by Lands Minister Ben Wyatt:

“The State Government is invested in the growth and development of Albany as the administrative centre of the Great Southern.

“With our Albany Waterfront development sold out and construction work in progress, the focus has shifted to the Middleton Beach Activity Centre.

“This project will further enhance the appeal of this popular beachside destination to developers.”
