Alarming statistics highlight Government’s failure to address crime

Tasmanian Labor
  • Government must take responsibility for shocking new police figures
  • Liberals fail to keep communities safe
  • Tasmania Police and emergency services must be supported
  • An alarming new report shows the Government is failing to keep Tasmanians safe.

The Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management November Corporate Performance Report shows the number of serious crimes continue to rise.

Shadow Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Jen Butler, said this is despite the Government’s tough on crime mantra.

“The Government can keep telling Tasmanians that it is getting tough on crime but these figures tell the real story – the Government is all talk and no action and is failing to keep Tasmanians safe,” Ms Butler said.

“In particular, the response times and clearance rates are of serious concern and are a clear indication of the Liberal Government’s inadequate resourcing of Tasmania Police.

“Police officers are under extreme pressure and face significant fatigue due to understaffing, long shifts and doing non-core duties.

“Unfortunately, we can expect to see crime rates continue to worsen as the Government slashes police budgets further.

“It’s not good enough. Tasmanians deserve to feel safe in the community and the Government must show some leadership and get serious on crime.”
