More North West Tasmanians will have a safe place to call home following the recent completion of social and affordable homes at Shorewell Park with the help of the Albanese and Rockliff Governments.
The Minister for Housing, Julie Collins, Senator for Tasmania, Anne Urquhart, and State Government representative Roger Jaensch met with new tenants of the homes this morning.
The new homes are another housing project completed in partnership with community housing provider Housing Choices Tasmania, following the Albanese Government’s investment.
These new homes will make an immediate difference in the lives of Tasmanians as part of the Albanese Government’s ambitious housing agenda.
The funding through the Federal Government’s National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation, comprising $31 million in loans and a $1.92 million grant, is helping to build up to 181 social, affordable homes at eight sites across Tasmania.
The Federal Government’s contribution has been complemented by $3.03 million in grant funding from the Tasmanian Government.
The Albanese Government recently announced a new $2 billion Social Housing Accelerator to deliver thousands of new social homes across Australia, including $50 million for Tasmania.
Minister for Housing Julie Collins said it was great to return to Shorewell Park after a visit earlier this year when these homes were under construction.
“It is especially exciting to hear from tenants directly about what it means to have a safe, affordable place to call home,” Minister Collins said.
“I’m proud that our Government’s new Social Housing Accelerator will enable the construction of even more homes like these in Tasmania.
“It’s also a great example of the kind of projects we could be helping build under the Housing Australia Future Fund.
“But this secure, ongoing pipeline of funding for social and affordable housing is being blocked by the Greens and the Liberals in the Senate.”
Tasmanian Minister Roger Jaensch said every Tasmanian deserves a roof over their head.
“This development will provide North West Tasmanians with a safe and secure place to call home,” Minister Jaensch said.
“Housing Choices Tasmania has done an amazing job with this development and we look forward to continuing to work them on current and future housing projects.
“This important partnership means we can continue to deliver more homes for Tasmanians in need.”
Senator for Tasmania Anne Urquhart said the completion of these houses at Shorewell Park will be life altering for those families who will soon call them home.
“It’s part of our commitment to build a better Braddon,” Senator Urquhart said.
“The Albanese Government wants to ensure more Australians have a place to call home.
“Through projects like this, and the recently announced $2 billion Social Housing Accelerator to build thousands of new homes across the country, we’re working hard to do exactly that.”
