Alice Springs Street Art Project Kicks Off

The Territory Labor Government’s Alice Springs Street Art Project has officially kicked off with the first three local artists commissioned to beautify and breathe life into the Alice Springs CBD.

The new street art will reflect the community and spirit of Central Australia and ensure that Alice Springs is ready to welcome visitors post COVID-19.

The first three artworks (up to 20 altogether) to beautify the CBD will roll out courtesy of local Alice Springs artists Mervyn Rubuntja, Melanie Gunner and Alison Hittmann.

  • Central and Western Arrernte/Aranda man Mervyn Rubuntja has three of his mesmerising West MacDonnell Ranges watercolour landscapes applied as window wraps at the Alice Plaza to breathe life into the northern end of the Todd Mall.
  • Local artist Melanie Gunner’s bright piece depicting Central Australian flora will transform the roller shutters at the ‘This Is Aboriginal Art’ gallery in Todd Mall. The roller shutters will be illuminated to create a safer and more enlivened Alice Springs CBD at night.
  • Artist Alison Hittmann is creating a stunning mural on the exterior walls of The Bakery depicting the quintessential character of the Red Centre’s galahs.

The project is part of the Government’s $15 million Revitalising Alice CBD initiative to reinvigorate the town and create a safer and more attractive Alice Springs for locals and visitors to enjoy.

The project will create up to 20 local jobs for local artists and up to 20 building facades and roller shutter doors in the Alice Springs CBD will be refreshed by the end of this year. Red Hot Arts Central Australia is delivering this project.

The Alice Springs Street Art Project is in addition to the Alice Springs Street Art Festival, which has been postponed, dates to be confirmed.

As stated by Member for Braitling, Dale Wakefield

“The Territory Labor Government is investing in Alice Springs and in projects that will attract visitors to our CBD, which creates jobs and boosts the local economy.

“Now more than ever, we are preparing our town to be visitor ready, once the Territory is in a position to receive visitors to enjoy all the rich and wonderful experiences that the Red Centre has to offer.

“The Alice Springs Street Art Project helps to keep local artists in work. We are proud to support these local artists to bring their artwork to life, reflecting the community and spirit of Central Australia.”
