The Queensland Police Service (QPS) and Queensland Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) have launched an investigation following an ibis succumbing to an arrow shot at Brighton yesterday morning, Thursday February 16.
Around 11.45am a resident on Prince Street raised the alarm, capturing the injured bird and taking it to the safety of their home and comforting it before it died.
Police believe the ‘target’ style arrow, approximately 80cm in length, was shot from nearby wetlands or parklands and the bird was targeted while it was on the ground foraging.
Carseldine Criminal Investigation Branch Officer-in-Charge Kenneth Rogers said the incident was distressing for the community and praised the actions of the resident.
‘Cruelty to animals is a punishable offence and along with the RSPCA, we will investigate this matter fully. I’d appeal for the person responsible to come forward, likewise, I’d encourage nearby residents along Prince, Princess, Bayview and Shepherd Streets to come forward with relevant CCTV or dashcam between 9am-12pm yesterday,’ Senior Sergeant Rogers said.
