Today’s confirmation that Kind Island Dairy will be closing comes as a shock and is terrible news for our King Island community.
Earlier this year, Jeremy Rockliff pledged to prevent the closure of the iconic King Island Dairy. Today’s announcement that it will close, and strip 58 people of their jobs is another example of a broken Liberal promise.
When asked about the closure back in February, his exact words were “That won’t happen. Not on my watch.”
Tasmanians have once again been let down by a Premier who never delivers what he promises and whose minority government can’t seem to get anything done.
These job losses will further damage confidence in the Liberal minority government’s ability to manage the Tasmanian economy and provide safe, secure, well-paid jobs for workers and their families.
It is a very sad day for the workers, King Island, and indeed the end of an era for an iconic Tasmanian institution after over a century in business. It will also come as another blow to King Island residents and farmers who have battled against dry conditions and economic hardships in recent times.
King Island is one of the most special places on earth and the brand is synonymous with the beautiful landscapes, hard-working people, and a warm and welcoming island community.
It is important now that the workers are looked after, and measures are put in place to support the Island’s economy through this latest challenge.
