APS helps make Victorian homes more environmentally sustainable

Australian Psychological Society

Environmental concerns can have significant psychological impacts on individuals and communities, from eco-anxiety and depression to the stress of dealing with physical health issues that can arise from climate change.

APS is committed to thinking about community psychological impacts holistically, and that includes weaving in resiliency measures around climate change wherever we can.

In a bid to do our part to build a more environmentally sustainable community, APS has lent its voice, alongside other leading industry bodies, to support the Healthy Futures initiative to make Victorian homes gas-free and introduce more renewable energy options.

We’re thrilled to report that our advocacy has been successful, with the Victorian State Government announcing last week that it will no longer be offering gas appliances and will be expanding its options for electrification.

Promoting the transition away from gas appliances offers several benefits. On top of the expense and environmental impact associated with gas-powered homes, gas appliances also emit pollutants such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, which can cause serious health issues such as respiratory issues, allergies and asthma.

Electrification reduces exposure to these harmful pollutants, leading to improved indoor air quality and fewer risks to public health.

By helping Victorians make the switch from old, expensive gas appliances, the initiative is supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of the community and is a welcome step towards a net-zero emissions future.

We would like to thank all our members and supporters who signed the open letter and contributed to this wonderful result.
