Australian-first netball court wins state innovation award

Truemans Road netball courts are home to newly resurfaced netball courts, upgraded by the Shire, loved by community and now recognised as state award winners.

The Australian-first resurfaced netball courts in Capel Sound, incorporate recycled household paint into its base layer to create a durable, play-ready surface for the local sporting community.

That base layer is made up of diverted paint from landfill, making up 22 per cent worth of the base layer.

The project was recognised at last month’s Parks and Leisure Australia (PLA) VIC/TAS 2026 Annual Region Awards of Excellence, where Truemans Road won the award for Innovation in Parks, Sport and Recreation. This recognises our impact in sustainable infrastructure and environmental innovation.

Mayor Cr Stephen Batty said that this award is a fantastic recognition of the innovation delivered for our community.

“Congratulations to the teams involved. This project shows what’s possible when we find a creative way to give new life to a waste product, that would otherwise end up in landfill.” Cr Batty said.

“The award recognises the vision, collaboration and commitment that is poured into countless projects across the Mornington Peninsula.”

Tootgarook Ward Cr Cam Williams said it was exciting to see a local project recognised at state level, and progress to the national awards.

“As state finalists, we now move on up to the National awards held later this year,” Cr Williams said.

“Best of luck to everyone involved in the Truemans Road upgrade. Knowing we are home to an Australian-first in innovation, is extremely special.”

Completed earlier this year, the resurfaced Truemans Road netballs courts upgrade provides a blueprint for how recycled materials can be incorporated into sporting infrastructure, reducing waste, supporting the circular economy and delivering lasting community benefits.
