Dementia Australia will be hosting internationally-renowned dementia expert, Prof Dawn Brooker, for an Australian masterclass tour on person-centred care this March.
Prof Brooker, Director of the University of Worcester Association for Dementia Studies UK, will embark on the tour following her keynote presentation at the ‘Dementia Australia National Symposium 2020 – Dementia care is quality care’ to be held in Sydney on 24 March 2020.
Dementia Australia’s Centre for Dementia Learning Director Dr David Sykes said the masterclasses are unmissable for management and healthcare professionals responsible for the implementation of the new Aged Care Quality Standards.
“Professor Brooker has spent the past 40 years working to transform the lives of people living with dementia and her research focus has been dedicated to inspiring the concept of positive dementia care,” Dr Sykes said.
“If your agency is either about to or currently driving a major change agenda, if you have an implementer role, will be overseeing service delivery, or are developing processes for your facility then attending the masterclass will set you up for success.”
The masterclass is an interactive half day session where participants will work through a range of exercises to assist them to apply the ‘VIPS’ framework in reflecting upon how person-centred their organisation is and identifying areas of strength and those requiring development.
The VIPS framework stands for values, individualised approach, perspective of the person living with dementia and social environment.
Each masterclass will be limited to an intimate group to ensure an interactive environment and opportunity for meaningful dialogue and better access to Prof Brooker for scenario-based questions.
Prof Brooker, recipient of the UK’s National Dementia Care Awards Lifetime Achievement Award, said she is looking forward to bringing her masterclass to Australia.
“Providing excellent dementia care is a challenge around the world,” Prof Brooker said.
“By taking a systematic approach using evidence about what works we can transform people’s lives – I look forward to meeting you at these events.”
Prof Brooker’s tour will begin in Sydney following the Dementia Australia National Symposium 2020 on 24 March and then go on to Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. For masterclass dates and
