Axe Throwers Give Back to Health & Emergency Workers

Melbourne health and emergency service workers have worked tirelessly throughout the global pandemic, caring for and saving the lives of local residents, business owners, children and loved ones.

After two of its own staff members had to be rushed to hospital for life saving procedures in recent months, the owners of Melbourne’s Lumber Punks Axe Throwing decided it was time to give back to our local heroes.

Any health care or emergency service worker that books into Lumber Punks Melbourne will receive a 50% discount, paying just $22.50, to crank some tunes and sling steel.

Co-Owner, Tyson McMillan, said it was just one way the business felt it could say thanks to Melbourne’s community and front line workers after 267 days in lockdown.

“The pandemic has been difficult for everyone in Melbourne, from residents stuck at home for months on end, business owners having to shut up shop, but particularly for our health and emergency service workers who’ve kept us safe,” Mr McMillan said.

“And after two of our own staff members lives were saved by our front line workers in the last two months, we knew we wanted to do something to give back.

Operations Manager, Jon Shaw, was one of the staff members in question.

“When I was recently in hospital, I was struck by the dedication, fearlessness and sheer commitment of all the staff. Facing immense challenges daily, both emotional and physical, they never failed to smile and entertain, as well as care for everyone.”

Mr Shaw was recently rushed to Melbourne’s Austin Hospital requiring open heart surgery and can talk about his experience and gratitude to Melbourne’s health care and emergency service workers for saving his own life, as well as others during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“When I told some of the nurses that I ran an Axe Throwing venue, they all wanted to come and “throw axes at Coronavirus.” So, in my recuperation bed, I designed the Coronavirus Axe Throwing Game.

When the time came for me to finally leave, it struck me that I had been saved and looked after by a huge team of people, but I could only say ‘thanks and goodbye’ to the handful working that day, and that simply wasn’t enough.

“So if you work in the health and emergency services, come down with your colleagues, your friends or partner and enjoy a night of fun slinging steel like a Lumber Punk”.
