Drivers in Melbourne’s north are another step closer to better journeys on an upgraded Childs Road through Epping and Mill Park as we forge ahead with the upgrade.
Construction crews have finalised a mammoth task that involved lifting 7 concrete beams into place, forming a new southern bridge over Darebin Creek.
Works have resumed, following the recent construction shutdown, under strict new CovidSafe measures to comply with the construction industry specific public health orders.
The beams were delivered from Melton company Westkon Precast and lifted by a 500t and a 350t crane. Westkon is one of the thousands of important supply chain businesses supporting construction and benefitting from the transport infrastructure boom.
Now that the base of the bridge is formed, the Childs Road Upgrade team will move to building the new deck and barriers. The bridge is a key step in taking Childs Road from 2 to 4 lanes between Beaumont Crescent and Prince of Wales Avenue, slashing congestion for more than 25,000 vehicles which rely on this key arterial each day.
In addition to the new bridge over Darebin Creek, traffic lights will replace the existing roundabout at the Bowman Drive intersection.
The upgrade will provide a much-needed alternative for east-west travel and will direct traffic away from South Morang and Epping town centres, easing congestion and giving local roads back to local drivers.
A walking and cycling path along Childs Road will also improve connections for local cyclists and pedestrians.
The Childs Road Upgrade is on track for completion in 2023.
