Being late to work is no excuse to speed

A motorcyclist had a lot of explaining to do to his boss after being caught doing almost double the speed limit on the way to work in West Melbourne today.

Melbourne Highway Patrol members clocked the 19-year-old allegedly travelling along Footscray Road at 115km/h in a 60km/h zone at 3.55pm.

When officers questioned why he was travelling at such high speeds in the rain, he said he was late for work.

He became even tardier when police impounded his motorcycle for 30 days.

The West Footscray man is expected to be charged on summons with speeding.

State Highway Patrol (North) members also came across a vehicle speeding in dangerously wet conditions today.

Officers intercepted the 30-year-old driver travelling at 129km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Western Freeway at Derrimut about 12.45pm.

The Maddingley woman’s vehicle was impounded at the cost of $940 due to driving on a suspended licence.

She is expected to be charged on summons and will appear in court at a later date.

The intercepts were part of Operation Argus, which focuses on impaired driving, motorcycles, excessive speed, driver distraction and not wearing seatbelts.

The state-wide operation will run for four days from 12.01am on Thursday 5 September to 11.59pm on Sunday 8 September.
