Bizarre and misleading comments need clarifying from struggling energy minister

Tasmanian Labor

Guy Barnett’s dismal performance on radio this morning has exposed how far the embattled Energy Minister is willing to go to cover up the truth about soaring power prices.

On radio this morning Mr Barnett lied to listeners, saying that power prices would not be cheaper if we had delinked from the National Electricity Market.

These statements fly in the face of the economic regulator’s determination, which said national wholesale prices are the cause for the sharp increase in power prices.

Mr Barnett’s claim that delinking from the NEM would mean we would become ‘Fortress Tasmania’, were followed by bizarre statements around exports of food and products.

Guy Barnett must now clarify if he is saying that delinking would impact our food and products exports.

These wild claims come at a time when the cost of living is rising and Tasmanians are struggling. Comments such as these should be carefully considered by the Energy Minister before blurted out on live radio.

Tasmanians need the cost of living eased, and a government focused on getting the basics right. Guy Barnett’s misleading comments and bizarre statements show the depth of the crisis he has created.
