South Australia’s profile as a national hub for swimming continues to grow with the Marshall Government securing the 2019 Australian Open Water Swimming Championships.
Australia’s best open water swimmers are expected to take to the waters of Brighton beach, as they begin their journey for qualification at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The Championship will be held from January 26-28 at Brighton Beach returning off the back of successful events in 2017 and 2018.
Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing Corey Wingard, said it was a great coup for South Australia to welcome back the Australian Open Water Championships.
“Competition is hot when it comes to hosting these world-class, high profile sporting events but South Australia continues to attract new and returning event partners who have faith that our state will put on a great show for a national and international audience,” he said.
“Our offerings are strong and securing events such as the dozen Swimming Australia meets, including two Olympic trials we have hosted in recent years, positions us as a major sporting and tourism destination.”
Minister Wingard said competitors were also becoming accustomed to the city’s outstanding venues, warm hospitality and supportive spectators.
“We have loyal and passionate sporting fans, who get out to our swimming meets and cheer alongside visitors, adding to the overall vibrancy of our state.”
South Australian Tourism Commission, Chief Executive, Rodney Harrex, said this was a chance for the public to see history in the making, while embracing the beauty of local surrounds.
“We are thrilled to be growing our reputation as a hub for national swimming events,” he said.
“Hosting blockbuster events keep our restaurants, hotels and local businesses full – fuelling jobs and extending the visitor economy.”
Swimming Australia Chief Executive Leigh Russell said he expected the Championships to attract more than 300 interstate visitors, staying an average of five nights and a small contingent of international visitors.
“We have forged a strong working relationship with the South Australian Tourism Commission over the past eight years and thank the South Australian Government for its continued support of swimming in Australia.
“The Open Water Championship is a hugely popular event and Brighton Beach is a truly iconic location to host an Australia Day swimming competition,” added Ms Russell.
The 2019 Australian Open Water Swimming Championships has been secured through the State Government’s Major Events Bid Fund.
