Today’s high fire danger rating for the Shoalhaven is a timely reminder that the bush fire season is almost upon us.
The bush fire danger period runs from September to March and that means getting a plan in place so that you know what to do if there’s a fire near you.
Acting Director City Services, Craig Exton, said there was a lot of helpful information on Council’s ‘We Know’ page which draws on critical information from the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) and includes information on how to prepare your family and your home.
“The Shoalhaven knows the devastation caused by fire and we know that you can never be too vigilant or too prepared,” Mr Exton said.
“Today’s warm conditions and high winds highlight how unpredictable weather can be and that it’s never too early to get ready,” he said.
Mr Exton said that to help residents prepare for the summer ahead, Council is providing free garden waste disposal at all recycling and waste depots throughout September. People should clear their garden of potential fuel hazards by clearing gutters, trimming overhanging branches and cleaning up fallen branches and debris.
The RFS has also let the community know that fire permits are required in the Shoalhaven from Sunday 1 September. All land managers and landowners who intend to burn piles of dried vegetation will require a fire safety permit.
Handy emergency contacts, how to stay connected and other ways to plan and prepare are featured on the We Know webpage.
