Business support must follow border decision

Labor has called on the government to extend business support programs in the wake of yesterday’s shock announcement on border closures.

Shadow Treasurer David O’Byrne said many businesses have been left reeling from the announcement.

“Tasmania’s business sector, and in particular the tourism and hospitality sectors, have been shocked by the decision,” Mr O’Byrne said.

“The viability of many of these businesses is under a cloud with a three-month extension of border restrictions.

“That’s why it’s vital the government provides a level of support that will help businesses reach December without shutting their doors.

“Government offered relief to business on payroll tax earlier this year, but shut the door on that scheme before many businesses felt the impact of COVID-19. The border announcement makes it clear that pain for businesses will extend for months to come.

“The government’s own reporting shows there’s still $30 million in the kitty for that scheme.

“There’s no justification for failing to reopen the scheme and use those funds as intended, to spare Tasmanian businesses some of the financial impact of COVID-19, and help those businesses keep Tasmanians in jobs.”
