Call for seasonal firefighters

Canberrans are being invited to join the Parks and Conservation Service seasonal firefighters to help protect the ACT next fire season.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman said the annual recruitment drive was a good opportunity for people who want to contribute to the safety of our region and who enjoy working outside.

“Seasonal firefighters play a crucial role in keeping Canberra safe while also protecting our water supplies,” Minister Gentleman said.

“We are looking for people who work well in a team and are keen to learn new skills. The successful applicants will be given full training in bushfire fighting, chainsaw operations, driving four-wheel drives, advanced first aid, and other on-the-job duties.

“There are 15 places available in the seasonal fire team, including three seasonal crew leaders.

“We are committed to incorporating Traditional Custodian fire management practices into our operations and are strongly encouraging Ngunnawal peoples and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples to apply for these roles.”

Ian Walker, Executive Group Manager, Environment, Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development said seasonals play a vital role in our preparedness for each bushfire season and can be quickly activated to help fight any fires.

“Seasonal firefighters gain valuable skills and experience providing a great career pathway into the Parks and Conservation Service with many securing fulltime employment,” Mr Walker said.

“The seasonals help provide increased firefighting capacity for the Emergency Service’s Agency Rural Fire Service and assist with fires in remote areas,” Acting ESA Commissioner Georgeina Whelan said.
