Calling artists for a date to remember

Local artists have an incredible opportunity for their work to be displayed far-and-wide, with entries open for the Surf Coast Shire Arts Calendar.

The calendar competition gives people a chance to have their work exhibited locally, with all submissions to be on display at Surf Coast Art Space in Anglesea from Friday 18 October to Sunday 3 November.

A panel will select 12 winning entries during the exhibition. A People’s Choice vote will also take place, with the most popular artwork as judged by the community to score the cover of the calendar.

Mayor Rose Hodge said the annual publication was hugely-popular.

“If you wander into a local business or you’re visiting a friend, you will often see the calendar on display in prime position,” she said.

“Thousands of people – both residents and visitors – view the calendar each year, so it’s a rare opportunity for local artists’ work to be on show to a large and diverse audience.”

Cr Hodge encouraged artists to enter, with people able to submit one piece in the competition.

“What a thrill it would be to be featured in the 2020 calendar,” she said.

Artists who live or pay rates in Surf Coast Shire can enter unless their work has appeared in the calendar in the past two years, in which case they are not eligible.

There are two categories:

  • Open (all media accepted)
  • Installed sculptural work (submitted as photo)

The 13 winning artists will receive a cash prize and acknowledgment in the calendar, which is distributed across a wide range of locations throughout the shire and available to community members.

Registrations close Friday 20 September at 5pm. Visit www.surfcoast.vic.gov.au/calendarcomp to register.

Surf Coast Art Space is located 2/103 Great Ocean Road, Anglesea.
