Sunshine Coast residents aged 12 to 25 – our leaders of tomorrow – are being invited to join an innovative Council program to inspire and engage young people and help shape inclusive and connected communities.
Applications are open for the Sunshine Coast Youth Action Group with the first workshop set to be held in September at the Thrive Youth Hub in Maroochydore.
Community Portfolio Councillor David Law said the program aimed to foster a strong connection between participants, while also empowering leadership skills and community networks.
“We have some great projects our young people can advise council on through the Sunshine Coast Youth Action Group, including health and wellbeing programs specific to young people, plans for a junior council in 2021 as well helping us achieve our Sunshine Coast Community Strategy priorities,” Cr Law said.
“Importantly, this is a wonderful opportunity for our future leaders to give advice on issues impacting our youth and for us to hear their voices loud and clear.”
Year 12 student Jordan Horne, 17, of Diddillibah, is the Queensland Youth Parliament representative for Ninderry.
She said it was essential youth were engaged in fostering a better and safer community, along with encouraging a youth voice among all levels of government.
“Youth are continually referred to as the change-makers of the future. However, we all know change can’t start without action,” Ms Horne said.
“By consulting youth and engaging them in council projects, we are ensuring a tight-knit community – both now and into the future – and helping to create active members in society who have the needs of the community in the forefront of their minds.”
Ms Horne said some of the biggest issues facing youth today included establishing a sense of belonging – especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“While social media has most certainly aided in keeping people connected, new initiatives – such as the Youth Action Group – will help bring youth together to foster new friendships and also aid in strengthening community spirit.
“Council’s Youth Action Group is an opportunity to create change and impact people both now and into the future.
“If you’re questioning if you should apply, then you are the perfect candidate for this program because the sheer fact that the Youth Action Group is on your mind shows you care about your community’s future.”

The program involves monthly workshops in a casual, relaxed setting.
