The ACT Government is rolling out better community infrastructure across our city, with six new projects now set to enter design based on community feedback.
“We are working to deliver the biggest upgrade to suburban facilities in Canberra’s history, with new builds and upgrades to support vibrant communities.” said Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel.
“Community consultation is an essential part of our delivery plans because we want these projects to reflect the priorities and aspirations local communities have for their neighbourhoods.
“With this feedback in hand, we can start design so that construction can kick off on local upgrades from early next year.
“This is just the latest in a series of projects that will be delivered for the community over the next two years, as we work to deliver better infrastructure across our suburbs and town centres.” said Minister Steel.
As the first projects to get underway, local shop upgrades are set to start construction at Duffy and Campbell in the next few weeks. We have also heard community feedback about the following local projects:
Casey community recreation park
- There was a high level of support for the community recreation park with the feedback reflecting a desire for facilities to cater for people of all abilities and ages – including older children, teenagers, adults and seniors.
- There was also support for the establishment of a basketball court, nature play equipment, a fitness circuit and climbing equipment.
- We are also considering more shade and indigenous cultural references, as well as engaging traditional owners in design and native flora and fauna considerations.
Tuggeranong foreshore improvements
- Concept designs will be released soon with the community’s top three priorities for improvements to infrastructure on the foreshore include better walking and cycling connections, toilet upgrades and having spaces for outdoor vendors.
- The community shows strong support for upgrades at the Tuggeranong Town Park, including the playground, the skatepark and furniture for seating, eating and study
Playground upgrades at Chisholm, Aranda, Gordon and Ngunnawal
- Most of the community wants the Alston Street playground in Chisholm upgraded with nature play and learn to ride facilities topping the list.
- Feedback focused on Aranda’s most popular playground on Banambila Street with support for nature play upgrades, seating improvements and climbing structures.
- At Point Hut Pond playground in Gordon nature play upgrades were supported, with more seating to facilitate community basketball games and all abilities playground equipment. Bike racks also rated highly in the feedback.
- At Ngunnawal’s playground on Burramarra Avenue the community said they wanted more climbing structures, slides and forts, with nature play also rating as a much wanted feature
