Professor Scolyer was one of Australia’s most influential cancer researchers, whose pioneering work helped transform outcomes for people diagnosed with melanoma around the world and brought hope to countless families affected by cancer.

Following his own diagnosis with glioblastoma in 2023, he continued to demonstrate extraordinary courage and determination, using his personal experience to advance research and improve treatment options for future patients. In doing so, he became a powerful advocate for the life-saving impact of cancer research.

We were privileged to welcome Professor Scolyer to Western Australia in 2024, where he generously shared his knowledge, courage and optimism at both our Auspire event and a Cancer Council WA health professional education forum.

As well as speaking about advances in melanoma treatment, he passionately advocated for skin cancer prevention, highlighting his work with Triathlon Australia to help introduce more sun-protective uniforms for athletes.

His unwavering commitment to reducing the impact of cancer, through both groundbreaking research and practical prevention measures, left a lasting impression on all who met him.

On behalf of Cancer Council WA, we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

Vale Professor Richard Scolyer AO.
