Carlisle Street Arts Space welcomes four legged friends

A Walk in the Park is now showing at Carlisle Street Arts Space until 5 May. Artist Andrew Foster’s exhibition features portraits of humans and hounds, graphite dog drawings and paintings which depict the well-known parks and gardens of Port Phillip.

It’s often said that dogs and their owners end up looking alike, such is the close bond many have with their canine friends.

While artist Andrew Foster isn’t the first to explore the interdependent relationship between humans and their dogs, by equally scaling the portraits, he accurately captures the true status of the dog in the family unit.

A Walk in the Park, showing at the Carlisle Street Arts Space, can be viewed until 5 May 2021 and features portraits of humans and hounds, graphite dog drawings and paintings which depict the well-known parks and gardens of Port Phillip.

Mayor Louise Crawford said the exhibition beautifully depicted the relationship between dogs, their owners and outdoor spaces.

“With many of us adopting dogs into our home over the past 12 months due to COVID-19, we have seen how quickly they have integrated into our family life and daily routines. Andrew Foster’s work wryly holds up a mirror to dog owners and lovers; reflecting the beautiful reciprocity of feeling between the humble family pet and its owner,” Cr Crawford said.

Andrew Foster is a St Kilda-based artist who has trained in Italy and Melbourne. He has had works hung at The National Gallery of Victoria, The Australian National Gallery and Heide Museum of Modern Art (Melbourne), and has regularly shown at various exhibitions for more than thirty years.
