Catalytic converters reduce toxic gases and pollutants and are found on many vehicles.
SA Police are encouraging vehicle owners to mark their catalytic converters or take steps to make it difficult to remove.
SA Police has seen an increase in the theft of catalytic converters across the metropolitan area. The devices are then sold on the second hand market which on-sell for the precious metals within them.
Acting Officer in Charge of Communications and Engagement Branch, Chief Inspector Cameron Devey said police have made several arrests in relation to these thefts, but are asking the public to assist in protecting their property as a way to prevent these crimes.
Previous thefts have occurred in residential driveways, public carparks and on main roads with public presence not seeming to deter offenders.
“To avoid your vehicle being a target, owners are encouraged to park cars in a locked garage where possible, or in a well-lit, populated area,” Chief Inspector Devey said.
“Catalytic converters are located under your car, usually at the front of the vehicle, so try to minimise access there by parking near walls or fences or with your bonnet facing a solid object.
“You can also identify parts on your vehicle by engraving or marking them – for example put your car’s VIN number on parts so second hand dealers have an identifying mark.”
Other options for protecting your vehicle include asking your local garage to weld the bolts holding your catalytic converter to make it more difficult to remove.
Also remember to lock your car and remove all valuables from inside the vehicle.
If you see someone acting suspiciously under a vehicle, report it to the Police by phoning 131 444. Obtain as much information as possible, including any vehicle registration.
