CBD Revitalisation Creating Jobs for Territorians and attracting visitors to NT

From ‘waterfront to waterfront’ the Darwin CBD will be filled with upgraded public spaces.

These projects are currently supporting local jobs and local businesses, while also making it a more liveable centre for Territorians, and a holiday destination for many.

So far, the transforming Cullen Bay project is moving along nicely and supporting Territory businesses with the landscape supply contract recently being awarded to Territory business, Darwin Plant Supplies.

Tenders regarding electrical, structural steel and plumbing will be released in the coming weeks.

Work on revitalising Cullen Bay is expected to create 60-80 jobs, lift the attractiveness of the precinct and create further community spaces, however it’s the ongoing economic benefits this project will bring to the wider CBD area which is the big winner. It will support ongoing Territory jobs and increase visitation, supporting Territory business.

Other community improvements to Cullen Bay will include:

– Walkable connected zones;

– Shade areas that lead you on a journey from marina to beach; and

– Safe spaces with ambient lighting.

These works will work in tangent with Darwin’s Civic and State Square precinct revitalisation, which is being undertaken as part of the $200 million Cities Deal.

This project, on completion, will benefit all Territorians through increased spaces for public enjoyment, improved tourism opportunity, and the enablement of activated spaces for public enjoyment.

Other CBD revitalisation and activation measures the Territory Labor Government has undertaken is the Street Art Festival, Laksa Festival, Bruce Munro: Tropical Light and the Laneway Series which commences again this month, and will also travel down to Cullen Bay later this year.

Works on Cullen Bay are expected to complete towards the end of the year.

As noted by the Member for Port Darwin, Paul Kirby:

“Local jobs is the main agenda of the Territory Labor Government. We are investing in our CBD, through supporting local Territory businesses while creating cooling, community friendly infrastructure projects, unlike the CLP who condemn job-creating infrastructure projects.

“60-80 local jobs will be supported during construction and beautification of Cullen Bay, inevitably creating flow-on effects of increased trade and visitors into the Darwin CBD.

“We promised to lift the CBD from waterfront to waterfront in Darwin and we’re delivering with areas that pay homage to our tropical lifestyle.”
