CCTV released and parkland to be searched as part of renewed appeal into Condell Park murder, NSW

Criminal Groups Squad detectives have released CCTV footage – and will search a south-western Sydney park today – as investigations continue into the 2020 shooting murder of a man at Condell Park.

About 7.30am on Monday 19 October 2020, emergency services were called to Simmat Avenue, Condell Park, following reports of a shooting.

A man was located nearby with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency services, he died at the scene.

The man was later formally identified as 44-year-old, Mejid Hamzy.

A grey Toyota RAV4, believed to be used in the murder, was found burned out in nearby Colechin Street.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Criminal Groups Squad established Strike Force Courier to investigate the shooting murder.

Investigators are also being assisted by the NSW Crime Commission (NSWCC).

During the investigation, strike force detectives charged a 38-year-old man in relation to the incident. He remains before the courts.

As part of ongoing investigations, detectives from the Criminal Groups Squad and specialist officers will search Deepwater Park, Panania, from 8am today (Tuesday 25 January 2022).

A coordinated search will be conducted of the area, including a creek adjacent Kelso Park South and Marco Reserve, as detectives continue to explore several lines of inquiry in relation to the shooting murder.

Strike force detectives have also released CCTV footage, depicting a sequence of events prior to and after the shooting:

  • A man walking west near a carpark at Kelso Park South, Panania, just after 4am.
  • Two men crossing Henry Lawson Drive towards Deepwater Park, about 4.35am.
  • Three vehicles – a black Mercedes-Benz AMG CLA45, grey Toyota RAV4, and white BMW 328i – travelling in convoy on Edgar Street, Condell Park.
  • Two men in dark clothing exiting the RAV4 on Simmat Avenue, about 7.25am.
  • Mejid Hamzy attempting to flee Simmat Avenue after the shooting, followed by the RAV4.
  • Two men in dark clothing running south in Colechin Reserve, Condell Park, about 7.35am. The hood worn by one of the men falls momentarily, revealing blond hair.
  • At Kelso Park bicycle track, two men in dark clothing walking together, about 8.10am.
  • A short time later, two men walking together through Kelso Park South carpark towards Marco Avenue.

One of the men was wearing a distinctive black and grey hoody with dark pants. The other man was wearing a dark coloured hoody with three distinctive stripes on the back, dark track pants with white writing on the leg and very white shoes.

Detectives believe the two men seen in the footage can assist with their inquiries. They are also appealing for anyone with information relating to the black Mercedes-Benz to come forward.

Criminal Groups Squad Commander, Detective Acting Superintendent Chris Goddard, said detectives believe the two men appear familiar with the local area.

“Their movements lead us to believe that both men know the area very well and may reside nearby, so we ask anyone from around East Hills and Panania to take a look at this footage, because you might recognise them,” Det A/Supt Goddard said.

“One of the men has been dubbed ‘Mr Blond’, because you can see he has blond hair when his hood slips off his head while he’s running.

“We believe both these men can assist our inquiries and would like to speak with them.”

Investigations under Strike Force Courier are continuing.
