The Northern Territory Police Force has arrested and charged two males in relation to a vehicle that was stolen in Tennant Creek yesterday morning.
It is alleged around 9:35am, two male youths aged 14 and 16, stole the keys to a Toyota Hilux before stealing the vehicle from a high school on Perry Drive.
The vehicle was sighted doing burnouts in front of the Tennant Creek Police Station a short time later, before travelling north on the Stuart Highway, allegedly driving at speeds in excess of 180km/hr.
A coordinated response involving members from Operation Talon, Elliott Police, Mataranka Police, the Fugitive Task Force and the Dog Operations Unit resulted in the successful deployment of tyre deflation devices on the vehicle approximately 30km south of Mataranka.
A cordon was established and the two offenders were arrested without incident after a prolonged search. Both have since been charged with driving a motor vehicle without consent, theft and breaching bail.
The stolen vehicle was recovered by police.
Superintendent Peter Dash said, “This is an excellent example of collaborative policing work across multiple units. This vehicle and its occupants were tracked from Tennant Creek to Mataranka using a number of tools available to police.
“I commend all involved for bringing these offenders into custody and preventing potential harm from occurring to other motorists or members of the community.
“This is a timely reminder that while responsibility always rests with those who choose to offend, keeping vehicle keys and valuables securely stored and out of sight may help reduce opportunities for theft.”
