City Booming In Lead Up To Christmas

People are spending more money in the city than this time last year, according to research undertaken by the City of Perth.

The data shows expenditure is $20 million a month higher than it was last October and up 7.8 per cent year on year.

Perth residents are spending 0.4 per cent more locally (approximately $700,000) and less in other Local Government areas by 0.3 per cent (approximately $525,000). They have also reduced their online spend by 0.1 per cent (approximately $175,000) all in favour of local business within the City of Perth.

At the same time more people are moving around the city with pedestrian activity up 36 per cent when compared to this time in 2020.

City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said the City was the place to be this Christmas.

“The City of Perth has a great line up of activities over the festive season including our iconic Christmas Lights Trail,” he said.

“We’re already seeing great results from the Light Trails with the number of visitors on Friday nights up 35.4 per cent compared with the first two weeks of last year while Saturday attendance is up 38 per cent compared to 2020.

“We’ve also got great deals on car parking including a flat rate fee of $5 at night time and three-hour free parking in the car parks close to our shopping heart – the Cultural Centre, Pier Street and His Majesty’s.”

The data also shows that the post-COVID trend of Mondays being a quiet day with lower vehicle congestion and lower pedestrian activity is changing.

“Mondays have definitely picked up and are very similar to other week days. Saturdays are also getting busier. Earlier in the year we’d see a short peak around lunchtime but now the city is busy throughout the afternoon.”
