City Celebrates Successful World Cup Bid – Morshead Park Nominated Training Venue

The City of Ballarat is stepping up pressure to secure training and matches after being part of a successful bid which saw Australia and New Zealand win the right to host the Women’s World Cup in 2023.

Ballarat Mayor, Cr Ben Taylor says Council – along with football fans across the country – is celebrating the news that the Women’s World Cup will come to Australia and New Zealand in 2023 and has welcomed the opportunities it brings to the city.

“Following our success in hosting Bahrain as part of the 2014 Asia Cup, City of Ballarat was invited by the Football Federation of Australia to be part of the Australia New Zealand bid to host the Women’s World Cup in 2023.

“We have been pleased and proud to put forward the Ballarat Regional Soccer Facility at Morshead Park as part of the trans-Tasman bid and see this as a perfect opportunity to raise the profile of the sport, to increase participation numbers and to get more women and girls involved in the world game” Cr Taylor said.

As part of the bid process, the City of Ballarat worked closely with the Bid Committee to have the Ballarat Regional Soccer Facility endorsed and approved as an official training site for the World Cup.

The City of Ballarat will continue to work with the football industry to ensure it can attract one of the participating teams to Ballarat in 2023. Council will also begin talks with the Victorian Government about how the two can work together to fund facility upgrades at the venue to make it even more appealing for international teams looking for a training base during the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
