The Darwin community is invited to join celebrations for the historic Exercise of Freedom of Entry Parade on Saturday 10 August from 10am.
City of Darwin will be transformed into a ceremonial frontline as the Parade takes place on our streets, commencing on Harry Chan Avenue.
CEO Scott Waters, who will adorn official Town Clerk robes for the occasion, said City of Darwin was proud to honour HMAS Coonawarra and encouraged the community to come along and experience the historic and ceremonial aspects of the Freedom of Entry Parade.
“The parade is a wonderful way for the Darwin community to gather together and thank the men and women of HMAS Coonawarra, who are based in Darwin, for their service.”
Mr Waters will officially grant freedom of entry to the city at the conclusion of the Parade at Raintree Park on Knuckey Street.
The history of Freedom of Entry dates back to the 11th century when a city trained soldiers for defensive measures and city protection. Freedom of the City was rigorously controlled by the city leaders as a measure of precaution rather than an act of grace. In modern times the granting of Freedom of Entry bestows no legal right or privilege on the recipient body, but it is accepted that the conferment is the most honourable distinction the City can give.
HMAS Coonawarra was originally granted Freedom of Entry to Darwin on 22 October 2013.
HMAS Coonawarra personnel will form up on Harry Chan Avenue, march via Cavenagh Street, left at Knuckey Street. The granting of Freedom of Entry will take place in Knuckey Street at Raintree Park. The parade will continue along Knuckey Street turning left at The Esplanade and conclude at The Cenotaph.
