Logan City Council has overnight and today worked closely with SES and Energex to safely clean-up Woodridge, Logan Central and other nearby suburbs after yesterday’s storm.
SES responded to 60 calls for assistance overnight.
There were 15 properties significantly damaged.
A number of large trees and power lines came down which cut electricity to at least 10 suburbs.
Energex advises that power has been restored in most areas with about 70 homes still without electricity as of 2pm today.
The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed the very localised super-cell storm likely included a small tornado.
More thunderstorms and heavy rain are forecast over the next 24 hours.
City of Logan Mayor Darren Power said the response to the storm had been swift and praised the local community for working closely with emergency responders.
He also thanked the efforts of Energex staff and SES volunteers from Logan, Ipswich and Redlands. Crews responded to 60 call-outs and worked until midnight to assist after the storm hit mid-afternoon.
“While we don’t see storms of this nature all that often, it’s a timely reminder it can happen and everyone needs to be prepared in the storm season,” Cr Power said.
“The clean-up and getting everything safe again has been a big job and we couldn’t have done it without the cooperation of the City of Logan community, who have a reputation for looking after each other when times are tough.”
With so many homes and business losing power, Cr Power reminded everyone to consider food safety and dispose of any frozen or refrigerated goods that could be affected.
