The City of Melbourne has opened applications for the 2019 Lord Mayor’s Commendations, continuing a tradition of recognising the enormous contribution small businesses make to the city.
City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp said small businesses and their staff are at the forefront of the Melbourne experience, connecting with residents, workers and visitors on a daily basis.
“I am delighted to honour small businesses and highlight their vital place in our city,” the Lord Mayor said.
“The City of Melbourne is home to 13,700 small businesses whose creativity, vibrancy and flair are central to our economy.
“Small businesses make up more than 80 per cent of all the businesses operating in our city, employing almost 80,000 people.
“Anyone who has run a small-business knows it’s a tough role, so it’s important we congratulate and honour the commitment of some of our longest-serving proprietors.”
Following a break in 2018 the Lord Mayor’s Commendations are back and open to any business proprietor within the municipality that employs 20 people or less and has operated continuously for more than 10 years. There is also a commendation for businesses run by three or more generations of the one family.
Businesses that have achieved any of the relevant milestones for recognition in 2018 or 2019 will have the opportunity to be honoured in the current round.

- 50+ years
- 40+ years
- 25+ years
- 10+ years
The Lord Mayor’s Commendations are free to enter and recipients will be invited to take part in a photographic exhibition and an exclusive presentation ceremony with the Lord Mayor.
