City unveils preferred light design for Lake Lighting Project

The Ballarat Community is being invited to view preferred light options for lighting up Ballarat’s iconic Lake Wendouree.

The $2.5million dollar Lake Wendouree and Victoria Park Link Lighting Project, is a partnership between the City of Ballarat and the Victorian government through Regional Development Victoria.

Approximately 220 lights will be installed around the Lake Wendouree foreshore in a project that will increase the lake’s accessibility and deliver a safe environment for its 345,000+users.

The lights will be programmed to turn on and off at times best suited to the needs of lake users, and with respect for local residents and the animals/insects that live around the lake.

The preferred lights for this project have been chosen to avoid light spill, meet the current Australian Standards for Public Lighting and have energy efficiency embedded through LED technology. They have also been chosen for their aesthetic and robust construction.

Stage 3 COVID restrictions have prevented planned face to face information sessions from being held. The City of Ballarat has set-up a static display at the Robert Clark Conservatory in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens and a mySay website has been launched, showing the proposed lighting model as well as providing background information for the community.

“Lake Wendouree is a much-loved, well-utilised community asset, so it’s imperative that all stakeholders have the opportunity to have their say about the lighting design, Mayor, Cr Ben Taylor said.

Feedback will be open until September 7.

A planning permit will be sought following the consultation period when residents will have further opportunity for engagement and to view more detailed plans regarding placement of infrastucture.

It is hoped construction can start on the project by late 2020/early 2021,subject to COVID-19 restrictions.
