An alleged drink driver is expected to be charged after she had a close call with a train in Essendon this morning.
Officers responded to reports of a vehicle stuck on the train tracks near Essendon Railway Station about 12am.
It is understood the driver lost control of her car whilst in the train station car park and ended up on the tracks, before an approaching train came to an abrupt stop, narrowly avoiding the vehicle.
Trains on the Craigieburn line were suspended for some time while the vehicle was removed.
The driver, a 60-year-old Essendon woman, was uninjured.
She was conveyed to Moonee Ponds Police Station where she underwent an evidentiary breath test returning an alleged reading of 0.105.
Sergeant Tim Fletcher said, “dangerous and drink driving affects the wider community and it is incredibly lucky that no one was injured in this incident.”
The driver had her licence suspended immediately, her car was towed, and she will be charged on summons with drink and careless driving offences.
This impound forms part of Operation Amity, a state-wide focus on keeping our community safe on the roads during the Australia Day long weekend.
The four-day operation aims to reduce road trauma, including the number of lives lost and injuries on our roads.
During this time motorists can expect to be breath tested and drug tested, and have their vehicles speed-checked by police.
The operation involves all available personnel including local road policing units, general duties, other operational policing units and centralised resources from Road Policing Command.
The operation starts at 12.01am Friday 24 January and runs until 11.59pm Monday 27 January.
